About The Building
The Carolina Foundry project is an adaptive reuse development in the Historic SouthEnd neighborhood of Charlotte. The existing buildings were originally utilized as an old smelting foundry called Carolina Foundry Inc. The project provided the challenge to save the existing structure, which was made difficult by the original use of the building and the harsh temperatures and chemicals associated with extractive metallurgy. Multiple design iterations were explored to repair and save existing structures while replacing that which could not be salvaged with respect to the context of the neighborhood. The project was redeveloped to divide into multi-tenant office spaces with a large atrium in the center which could be utilized as a co-working / active public space.
